Quick Creativity

Today I thought I’d share a technique with you that I like to use when I’m short on time to create, or when I’m doing short timed sketches.
I’ve been so busy lately with home and garden projects, and attending all my boys’ different activities, that creative time has definitely taken a back seat, unfortunately. Last week, as I was weeding the garden, the sweetest little juvenile Robin joined me to pick out the ants that I uprooted with the weeds. Luckily, I had my phone to hand and managed to snap a few pictures of him. This sparked my creativity and I had to make my way to my study to get a quick bit of work down in my sketchbook. I only had a few minutes to get something on paper before the school run, but this is such a simple and enjoyable way to sketch with dry media, that a few minutes is all I needed.
I pulled out an Ecoline Brush Pen - No 439, a Faber-Castell Goldfaber Coloured Pencil - No 176 and a Caran Dache NeoColour II - Ochre. Colours that spoke to the colouring of the birdy. I then grabbed my new Royal Talens Art Creations Sketchbook - 13cm x 21cm and set to work. I started by using the brush pen to lay down the whole shape of the bird in one blob, flipping through the photo’s to choose different poses to draw. I then went over those shapes with coloured pencil to add some simple outlines and details to make those blobs resemble a bird. I finished up by adding some of the flecked colouring of the Robin using the wax pastel. All in all this two page spread took about 15 minutes and I was happy with how it turned out. I was even more happy with how I felt after taking the time to create something that brought me joy.
